Fragments of Memory

Artist's Statement: This series of paintings was conceived in Portugal in 2008 and developed from preliminary sketches and drawings throughout 2009-10. The works explore the relationship between past and present, old and new, They are based on my response to viewing old walls and medieval towns and cities, their sense of history and the events they encapsulate. Many walls disfigured with age and others deliberately marked and damaged by human activity all contribute to their history. In executing these works I have endeavoured to draw many of these elements together as windows on a lost past in the contemporary world.
